boost gauge...what exactly is it measuring? 850 1997

The intake manifold sees positive air pressure (created by the
turbo). The air charge is "forced" into the engine (normally
aspirated engines rely on normal air pressure to do this -- air
rushes in to fill the vacuum left in the cylinder). Basically,
your engine breathes more air/fuel and produces more power then
it would if normally aspirated.

I believe 1 bar is 14.4 pounds (14.4 being normal atmospheric
pressure at sea level).

Stock, your engine runs about .7 bar boost. So, if the gage reads
to 1 bar then sounds like it is about right (I have a 70 series
turbo and we don't get the gage so I don't know if it is
calibrated in bars, or not, since I have never seen one up close).

www.tme.com has some good info on turbo volvos.
