Greg--I've looked at IPD's code reader and I would not buy it. Be aware that most code readers out there read only enginetrain codes and a few others. California, I understand, passed a law mandating by January 2003, that ALL codes, not just engine, must be made available to the customer, the same as are available to the dealer. This means that Volvo will have to turn loose of all 440+ codes that are encoded for the 850 if they want to sell their cars in California, and not just the 150 or so that are mandated (i.e. enginetrain). And, since more Volvos are sold in California than anywhere else,I think they are going to be forced into doing it, to the detriment of their service departments (note the lack of tears here). I wrote an email to Actron, which sells a handheld code reader, and they were not interested at all in upgrading their code reader to reflect the California law. So much for their profit margin. There are a number of people out there who sell software for PC's for reading the mandated Volvo codes for around a $100 that will access all the available enginetrain codes to date, as well as reset the service light, which IPD's reader won't do. These guys are sharp, and if Volvo is forced into releasing all their proprietary codes to the public for cars sold in California, then it will only be a matter of time before the software people get hold of the rest of these codes and include them in their software. I would not buy IPD's scanner or any of the other until the ramifications of the California law are known, which should be sometime by this summer or fall. Dick
