Consequences of timing belt being 2 cogs 'off' 850 1996

I'm surprised your car would even start let alone run well. My '94 with manual tranny suffered from what turned out to be a weak timing belt tensioner and if left in gear (reverse I think) on a hill, the tensioner would get loaded while the car was parked. Then when you would go to start the car, the tensioner would not "tension" quickly enough and the T-belt would slip a cog or two and not run or generally even start.

To answer your question, 2 cogs should not have done any damage, but the 5 cyl engine is definitely and interference engine and if many more cogs had slipped you prpobably would have chewed your valves to pieces. The question you ought to be asking is why the heck did the T belt slip in the first place. I'd start with the tensioner. How many miles on your car? and have you had the T-belt serviced at the 70k intervals?

FWIW, my original tensioner was replaced under warranty sometime in the first 25k miles. It has not been replaced since (car now has 233,000 mi) but I do have it checked by the dealer whenever he changes the T belt.
