I have just received an e-mail from Dan Harrison answering my question about the resetting the service light on 96, 97, 98 Volvos --

No, his tool cannot do that at this time.

So my quest continues, and I'm going to stay on it. Meanwhile, I use the light as a turbo reminder light, as suggested here. Fortunately, it usually goes out just before I get to the on-ramp for the highway :)
