Inaccurate fuel gauge S40-V40 2001

My 2001 s40's gas gauge is off by about 3 or so gallons (i.e., when it registers 1/2 tank, it only takes about 5-5.5 gallons to fill the tank...at 1/3 of a tank, it takes 8-8.5, etc.-- the tank is 16 gallons--). The dealer just replaced the in tank sender unit, thinking that'd fix it...well it didn't...Any suggestions? In the archives, there's a post saying the gauge depletion rate is based on a number of factors (fuel consumption, established empty and full levels, etc.) See http://www.brickboard.com/ARCHIVES/1999AUG/10014758.shtml for the post. Is this applicable to all S40s or just phase I (1999 in the post)? You would think that gauge would report what's actually in the tank...it wouldn't "calculate" it. Thanks for the help.
