All Wheel Drive V70-XC70 1998

This 1998 V70 AWD with 67000 miles.
Just spent $5000 for replacement of angle gear assembly and drive shaft on all wheel drive. Was 1200 miles from home and had to go to dealer for repairs. Two seperate problems. Ruptured seal on drive shaft joint allowed water in and lack of lubrication ruined drive shaft. Replacement of "blowout" with one new tire (only 3/16" total radius difference)on front ruined the angle gear. Owners manual only says "replace with same size and type of tire". Tech bulletin notes that there can not be any difference in size of tire including inflation pressure. I enjoy this car, but am very disappointed with Volvo's design of AWD. Has there been any changes in subsequent years? 1999-2002?
