can't erase codes 850 1995

For some reason, I can't seem to erase codes (414 & 143) in A2 port. After pulling the two codes I got, I displayed the first code again, then after holding the button down for five seconds, it just wants to give me the codes again. I'm looking for the solid light so that I can hold the button for five seconds again, but I'm not gettung it. I've done this so many times, but it's giving me a headache this time. Should I turn off ignition after pulling codes and then perform erase procedure or keep trying as described above?
