No response from diagnostic port 850 1995

the one htat works instead of buying a scan tool. I tried to use it once about 2 months ago, and got no response - I chalked it up to my not knowing how.

then yesterday I decided to try and reset the service light. I followed the IPD directions (which match the Chilton's ones for the '93 and '94 & seem to match the ones at Bay 13 too)

the led never came on in any case, and doing the reset service light proceedure pretending the light came on had no effect to the service light.

since my wife just got a '96 I'll probably end up with a scan tool anyway.

But is there any common problem with the diagnostics that I should start with?
