How do you 'approach' top speed. 850

Ray,

one "safe" place to try for a top speed run is on a race track, an oval or soft triangle set-up. Because of the embankments, you do not feel the forces nor the speed and an average-experience driver can push the car...just pray that a tire does not blow! ;)
