keyless entry malfunction 850 1993

Help! I recently purchased a fabulous used 850 with almost 200k miles. It runs like a top, but the automatic door locks don't work. Not only won't they work with the remote, but they don't all lock/unlock with the key in the driver's door or trunk. And unlocking a front door from the inside also has no effect. The previous owner had a mechanic offer to fix them, but it was a bit steep and she opted out at the time. I'm looking for resources on how to diagnose/fix the problem, but can't seem to find any. I've searched the Haynes manual and the web. Any ideas on where I might turn?
