S40 Turbo ABS light problems S40-V40 1998

After being stood for a week at the airport after some pretty
bad wet weather conditions - my S40 ABD system shut down with the
ABS light and (P) brake system light on continuously. The lights come
on at ignition and do not extinguish. My local Volvo independant garage
checked the ECU for codes and came the conclusion that it was an ECU fault.
Trouble is if they replace the ECU and its not the ECU Volvo will not accept
the unit back. The Volvo main dealer told me the same story. Given all the posts
about Volvo ABS light issues - I am not convinced its the ECU either and dont
see why I should risk $600+ to change something that might not fix the problem.
Any one else had similar issues with S40 ABS ? Any tips on how to fault find
this one ?
