Power Loss after rebuilt installed.. What could cause this? 850

My car recently had a rebuilt motor(from volvo) installed at a local shop. The day I drove away I noticed alot less power than the car had with the old motor with 170k miles on it. The mechanic said I need to 'break in' the motor and it should get all of the power back. Well i have 1500 miles on it and the power is even less than when I drove it from the shop in December. I am trying to find out if it could be something other than the motor causing the power loss. Could any of you give me suggestions as to what might cause such a loss in power??
