Temp gauge spiking on 1993 850 GLT (98K -- still a baby!) 850 1993

My temp gauge has spike into the red zone twice in the last 4 days, for seemingly no reason. Not doing major driving (home 6 miles from work) and was going at a low speed around town.

It only stays there for a few minutes and then the fan cools the engine down (the 2nd time I blasted the heat to help as well). Otherwise the car is running fine.

Any ideas as to what this is before I drop it off at the mechanic's tomorrow morning? He's fantastic but I don't want to bring it in for a simple fix or a "they do that once in a while" situation.

thanks, in advance, for advice.
