Transmission Fluid Change S70 1998

Dana:

I was a little apprehensive myself about the transmission fluid change in my V70. The Bay 13 instructions are great - I actually found it easier to do than changing the oil! Once you get the clip off the upper fluid line, the rest is a snap.

Also like everyone else said - there's no filter, and the drain plug at the bottom won't do much other than to "freshen" the fluid.

I used gallon milk jugs and got some clear tubing from Home Depot (5/8" diameter) and slipped it over the line. A helper started the car and when the milk jug was half full we turned off the car and added two quarts of fluid via a long neck funnel. We repeated this 6 times (12 quarts), although others recommend 16 quarts.

Guess what - transmission shifting is much smoother and the "crispness" it had when new is restored. My car is driven very easy and only had 45K on it, and that fluid was DARK DARK DARK! I'm not sure what Volvo was thinking when they recommended no scheduled change interval.
