Yes there should be a certain amount of play. I remember a few years ago when they had an expose on auto scams they showed(on hidden camera) the mechanic moving the wheel around on a lift.
I had a Honda dealer tell me once that my car was going to explode at any minute if I didn't get a new computer!
I think that the classic repair scams have always centered around safety items(At least Sears just kept to the struts and shocks). The general idea is that while you waited for a second opinion the wife and kids might just drive off the road.
The same Volvo dealer also scammed me with an expensive rear brake and rotor replacement(he had me in a corner because of the expired inspection)
I think that Ford's influence is beginning to be felt!
