Automatic shifter release sticking 850 1995

My car is an automatic, and the shifter-release button (is that the right
name for the button on the shifter that you press to move the shifter
out of park?) sticks, and most of the time I have to use the override
button down by the base of the shifter. My Volvo service mechanic says
its a recurrent problem with mid-90s Volvo's, and just to leave it and
use the override button, but its irritating. Anyone had this problem,
any solutions?
Thanks!
