How does TRACS operate? 850

I'm sure that someone has already asked this, but I couldn't find the thread to read about it, so here goes anyway:

In the 850 series how does TRACS operate? When does it kick in, etc. I gather this is something that is only effective at low speeds? (e.g. would hitting a patch of ice on a highway be much be assisted by this.) Also, how reliable is the TRACS system? Would an 850 without it be more stable?

I'm looking at getting a 94-95 850 (in my price range) so I was researching this option. I couldn't find much about it otherise.

Thank you for the help.
