shift light replacement -help me! 850 1995

I know this has been discussed before and I've tried to follow the instructions, but I can't seem to remove the cover in front of the shifter. I've removed the ashtray, and loosened the two screws near the ODB input. Still the piece will not come out (nor will the screws). I don't want to go through the entire console removal procedure. I'd rather approach the burned out light from the front with some needle nose pliers.

Am I missing something? Please help if you can.
