battery water 850 1996

i want to make sure i didnt overfill my battery,i poured regular tap water in all of the openingg of my volvo battery,when i screwed back the caps,NO WATER came out of the openings.Does that mean i did not overfill it??
please advise !! thanks in advance.
by the way ,can you do damage if you overfill your battery,and does the water expand or get hot in a car battery? like coolant does ?
i live in south florida!!
1996 850 sedan,74,000 miles , battery 3 years old!!
