Turbo Volvos (with or w/o Motronic upgrade) - what oil is best??

I read on volvoperformance.com about an upgrade they did with the Motronic ECU, and they mentioned that the manufacturer recommends to go with a synthetic 5W-50 or better oil with the modifications. I have no problem going with a synthetic oil now that I have the extra HP, but 5W-50 seems a little extreme to me. I live in Southern California, so I do have the benefit of consistent weather and no 'cold starts' except for super early morning winter starts (a whopping 45 degrees or so). What recommendations do all of you have?
