94 brake scraping noise ? 850 1994

Hi Guys,

I own a UK RHD 1994 850 2L 20V with 168k. I show her every year so I try and keep her original as I can, with a few mods here and there.

Over this last year I have been in the process of renovating her, but a problem I thought that I would have fixed hasn't been.

I have aftermarket slotted brakes installed. I had a bad rattle sound, eventually identified as the pads ratteling around in the new calipers I had put on. So I changed back to OEM and ratteling stopped but the scraping noise I have stayed. I tried to identify the source comes form my left front.

I had thought that the aftermarket rotor/disc was the problem scraping on the Caliper but no. Having read the other message board and the alt.auto.volvo I am in two minds to what it might be, as this is getting past my technical skill for fixing...

I took of my wheel and pushed away the tin guard as advised someone but still suffered the sound. I then removed the caliper to see if there was any scoring on it and there was not. I thought due to the rust on the top of the aftermarket disc this may have been rubbing on the inside of the caliper.

What was first noticeable was by now rotating the wheel NO grinding sounds could be heard. I then reseated the caliper home and guess what the noise returned.

The history of this wheel so far is:-
120k replace the wheel bearing.
130k replace the front discs/rotors with after market slotted and pads. Then developed a binding caliper on the present bad side.
150k replaced both front ( as the present bad side was binding! ) and rear calipers with OEM/recons as they were mustard yellow in colour. Now suffered a rattle in the summer heat (yes in the UK some rare event). Found the after market pads were rattling in the new calipers, replaced again back to OEM pads.

This stopped that but now suffering the grinding noise. Has the disc/rotor become warped as I have suffered the symptom on both old/new calipers. After visiting the my original dealer who didn't pick up the rear rotor warpage has one of the fronts gone the same way ?

PLEASE HELP. thanks with a bad back.

Mark in the uk.
