One comment-you don't _need_ a torque wrench, but the oil pan is cast aluminum so it's critical not to over-torque. A stripped thread will not be much fun...
I use synthetic myself, and factory cartridges. You'll need a special wrench to take off the filter housing (it's plastic, and only somewhat accessible, the proper wrench ensures that you won't crack it)

The factory filter inserts include the o-ring that goes on the filter housing (you need a new one each time) but not the crush washer.
