keyless remote not accepting the program - how to troubleshoot? 850 1994

I have a 94 850 turbo that I can't seem to program. I have two remotes. The first is original to the car and formerly worked, until my wife dropped it down a 10 story elevator shaft. It doesn't work now, although disassembly doesn't reveal any problem. The second I just got from e_Bay and looks exactly like the first. Both have the lock/unlock oval buttons that are side by side. I followed the usual instructions regarding the key on five times and hit a button method, but the light on the dash never lit and the remotes don't program (fresh batteries). Does anyone know if the instructions for a 94 are different than the five on and hit a button method that is often posted? Can anyone provide any way on how I can troubleshoot my system to determine if the car (as opposed to the remote) has a problem? Thanks.
