Why would you (or anyone else) blow your turbo? When you do upgrades like this you do them to enjoy your car not to kill it. Furthermore, you must switch to synthetic oil.

I your case, you are out of warranty (I assume you have a 1996). So, if you damage any part of your engine you are out of luck with Volvo.

Soldering a chip, if done PERFECTLY (ther are far more chances that it will not be done perfectly) it is OK. If not, you could be facing trouble and lots of downtime.
