CV shaft replacement advice... 850

I took my 850 turbo to have the wheels aligned and they told me that the cv boot was busted and therefore had no grease. First, they told me I had to replace the cv shaft. But later they told me I needed to replace the front axle since the cv shaft is part of the axle. If I just replace the cv shaft and not the axle, they said it will squeak and give me problems down the road. As I am clearly not a mechanic, does this sound legitimate? I had a hard time trusting these guys because they seemed a bit confused themselves! Any advise is greatly appreciated!
