third seat intallation??? 850 1997

I did this installation myself when I bought my 96 850 Wagon. Dealer wanted $1,100 for the seat installed, but only wanted $400 for the kit. I decided to save the money and spend a weekend familiarizing myself with the new car.

Kit is far more complex than it needs to be. Dozens and dozens and dozens of little clips and fasteners and screws made this time-consuming process. Nothing was very difficult, it just took a tremendous amount of time to do it correctly.

If your friend is the kind of person who will want to do a fast and sloppy job, this may not be the job for him. Some of the fasteners screw in to soft materials, so if you are not paying careful attention to the tools you are using, you are going to end up with plenty of fasteners loosening, or falling out, over time (not to say that the dealer might not do any better). You need to do this installation with a light touch.

In particular, there is a step where you must cut into the rear of your back seat to anchor a plastic catch. Getting this in just the right place is very important! Take your time on this step and do it right. I would cut out less material than is necessary on the first pass. You can always cut more material out of the way, but you can never add material you've already cut. Even if you do it right, you may have to glue the piece in place 'cause the way it is configured, you snap the piece in place by pushing it up. Over time, this piece, under the influence of gravity, slides down and works its way out of the back seat. I ended up gluing mine in place with upholstery adhesive.

Good luck.
