Fixing the glove compartment latch 850

One of the kids broke the latch on the glove compartment while it was locked (GRRRRRR). Read in a Volvo newgroup about several ways to deal with getting it openned and repaired. Some said to destroy the door and get a new one. One said he had a trick to uncouple the latch with a tool made from an old can openner. Most said to hack saw the bracket and replace the bracket.

So, for those in my same boat, I thought I would post my solution. First, I followed the crowd who said to hack saw the bracket. That got it openned. Now this part is not glamourous, but it works. I removed the reaming pieces of bracket and got some industrial grade Velcro. Using a strong adhesive, I stuck the two mating pieces on the edge and door top. Once dry, it works like a charm. When closed, it looks normal. Can't lock it, but the car comes with an alarm anyway. Besides, not much value in the glove box anyway.

hope this helps...
