V70 or 850 wagon? V70-XC70

As I continue my quest in searching for my first volvo, I began to question whether or not to get a newer model wagon in the V70? I have read all about the 850 and the most important factor is that the 850's were built before the "Ford taking over Volvo" era. What have you guys heard between the 850 and the V70? Is one much better that the other? Am I going to notice a difference between the 2 besides styling?
