options for protecting parked car from bird droppings? V70-XC70 1999

Hello,
I live in an apartment complex and my parking space is directly below some trees where birds perch and frequently (probably at least every other day except in winter) relieve their digestive systems on my black car. I used to only handwash my car, but now I take it to an automatic car wash at least once a week, seeing it to be the lesser of two evils. I had thought about getting a car cover. However, I was under the impression that using a car cover on a car which is not very clean would result in scratches as the dirt gets trapped under the cover. Is this true? Also, how does one wash a bird-dropping-soiled car cover? Put it in the clothes washer? I'd like to hear what others in similar situations have done.

Thanks,
Alvin
