What does this mean? You're used to downshifting to slow the car or simply there's more braking action between a standard and automatic transmission? [I know this isn't your question but I think downshifting is a bad idea. The brakes are designed to make the car slow down and it's much less expensive to replace brake pads and rotors versus clutches, engines, transmissions, not to mention the additional fuel consumption.]

I'm not a transmission expert but I can't see how shifting in and out of neutral could be hard on the transmission. But I don't understand the second part of this question. If you pop it into neutral the drive train won't slow the car at all.
