Safest among FWD/AWD Volvo wagons (and vs. Jetta/Passat wagon)?

As we plan a family we want to upgrade from our 82 240 and a newish American car to a wagon suitable for lots of highway driving including during the winter. We are considering a 2-4 year old wagon, with at least FWD.

On the government crash-test website, there is some difference between years for the same model (sometimes only 4 stars rather than 5, for example). I don't put too much stock in such measures, but it does make me wonder what is the safest car for babies, pregnant mothers, etc. Does anyone have any guidance on what wagon to buy? Dependability would of course be an important secondary concern.

Also, I notice the VW wagons do pretty well on the crash tests. That would interest me because I could get a diesel. Any thoughts on the safety of these vs Volvos would also be helpful.

Thanks!
John
