Trasmission slippage V70-XC70 2001

Just noticed a problem with slippage in the transmission. It appears to happen between second and third gear. The other day when rounding a corner as I apllied
the gas to accelerate, the tachometer went to 3500rpm the engine reved but the car barely moved. Today the same happened when I tried to pass again around 2nd to 3rd gear speed.
I have an appointment on Thursday to download new software. My question has anyone else experienced this and how do I know it is software or is it really a problem with the trasnsmission. Software issues almost sounds like a coppout but maybe I'm being to critical. Any thoughts. Thanks Mike
