Will ECU upgrade without exhaust upgrade cause damage V70-XC70 1998

I want to chip my V70 AWD and make it into a V70'R' AWD. Narrowed it down to IPD or Wett. With IPD new prices, getting more and more competitive to Wett. (IPD at $850 US, Wett at $1095 Cdn, I'm in Canada) Question and comment please, my exhaust is in fine condition, would hate to gut it now. Will definitely go with a 2.5" cat back when stock exhaust wears out. Will chipping without upgrading exhaust hurt the car? Will it decrease the HP and torque gain as advertised by IPD or Wett?
