Check Engine Light....But no codes stored. 850 1997

I am at my wits end with this problem. I have a check engine light that is on, however when scanned with an OBD-II scanner no codes are stored. Could this be a mistake. I have had to automotive parts stores use their scanner and nothing. Please advise if you have had this problem or if there is another way to clear the computer in case it was a malfunction. They tried to erase but nothing to erase.

Tony
