connecting an infant car seat in 854 850 1997

I recently had to transport a 1 yr old in my car and upon trying to install the seat noticed it is not really secured(at least in my 97 854). First off, in the forward facing position, you're just securing the bottom part of the seat. I installed it in the right rear seat. So, if I were to go 50 mph and had to make a sudden stop, the seat could topple over; The seat was a fairly popular brand(I don't recall the name) and it had a latch to connect to an anchor(I guess somewhere on the rear speaker deck). My car have no such anchor. Am I doing something wrong or the car is not equiped to properly install a child car seat??? Also, if u were to install the seat in the middle, technically it can roll to the side where it's not strapped in, right??? anyone have car seat solutions?? TIA, BD
