High-pressure water hose damaging to paint? V70-XC70 1999

Hello,
Here in the Boston area, there are numerous self-service car-washes with high-pressure water hoses. Usually I like to use these just to rinse off bird droppings. I was wondering: Is it possible to damage my car's paint finish with the high-pressure water stream? I imagine that if the stream is strong enough to remove dried bird droppings, it might be strong enough to remove paint. Am I justified in my fears here? Would it be safer to use the high-pressure stream at a distance from the paint surface rather than up close?

Thanks!
