I'm very interested in what stuts/shocks will get my 1994 850 turbo wagon riding smoother and handling better. Harsh doesn't even begin to describe, but we tolerate the ride. I just wish that with all the harshness some decent cornering ability came along with the package.
In comparison, my 1987 Audi 5000 turbo quattro (stock suspension except for Boge Turbo Gas struts front and rear) just glides over the same road surfaces and handles considerably better as well. My 1986 4000 quattro with HR Springs and Bilstein Sports is a tad harsher, still not as harsh as the 850t, and just trashes it in the handling department (and I mean badly)...pity it only has 115hp though.
Our car has 138k miles and the front struts are original. I know they need to go. I am aware that some types of struts get stiffer with age (Bilsteins I had on a 911S years ago for example got hard as rocks) so perhaps that is part of the problem. Rear shocks were recently changed by the previous owner (O.E.). I figure the place to start is front struts. The question is, O.E. (not likely), Boge Turbo Gas (I'm pleased with them on my tq and they're less $ than Koni or Bilsteins), Koni or Bilstein. I would love to hear some first hand BTDT advice on this. www.shox.com is likely where I'll buy whatever I decide on. Oh, and how tough are front struts to change on the 850? I take it that out the top of the towers ala type 44 Audi is not the case :( (I can do one of those now in well under an hour, both sides).
