The Lights are on but no codes are home... V70-XC70 1998

Over the past few weeks my ABS and TRACS OFF lights have been going on and off intermittently. I've tried to pull the code when the lights are on, but my code reader show there is nothing to be retrieved. Does it take something more than an OBDII code reader to access the codes? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
