Stiff shift linkage especially when cold V70-XC70 1999

Mine's been doing the same thing for about the last 90,000 miles. It's
perfect" once the car warms up. Otherwise I'd wonder if your clutch is completely disengaging. I believe the linkage is actually a cable. It might be worthwhile trying a gear oil change. I think it's a special Volvo blend, and synthetic. The Haynes manual indicates a manual transmission oil change at 60k, although the US service manual doesn't suggest one.
