854 power antenna repair question 850

My 93 854 has a broken power antenna. I have the new part, and have seen the instructions on Bay13, but it appears that some of the plastic tail gear is still down in the motor- it broke off. How hard is it opening up the motor? This is not covered on the Bay13 page. It looks like I need to take it off the car, but I didn't see an obvious way to open it up.
Any tips on this one greatly appreciated!
