Strut/shock advice needed 850 1994

Okay, took my '94 854 with 104K miles to the garage because tires are cupped or chopped. Put it up on the lift and mechanic says I need new struts and shocks, both swaybar end links (I have lived with the rattling for four years now) and driver side ball joint. Quote, including new tires and new Boge struts/shocks, is over $1,700! Struts still seem okay- no bounce in suspension, etc., but at 104K, they probably need to be replaced. Question- I am wondering whether to upgrade to Bilstein but have read mixed things about the HD struts/shocks that they are too firm. I value good handling but do not want the ride to get any harsher than it is right now. Would appreciate any advice on this. I will most likely get a second opinion as this is a big number. Thanks.
