Well, I guess it depends on just how determined you are or how badly you want to save money. It's a 10 hour job in a shop because the engine must be supported, axles and related suspension parts removed from the subframe, steering rack and engine mounts unbolted from the subframe, remove subframe, then trans while engine's lowered so that trans clears frame. Not at all like any "good ol'" RWD car which was cake in comparison.
It's easy on a hoist with the OEM Volvo special tools, trans jack and power tools (experience helps too) but I personally wouldn't consider it in my garage at home, in my spare time as it won't exactly be a "fun" job unless you're in your early 20s and think stuff like that is still "fun", not me. There's several things on cars I wouldn't even consider doing at home anymore if I didn't still work in a dealership and that's one of them. My $.02.
