Rear Main Seal Leak... Mis-diagnosis 850

I am having some confusing information regarding this topic (rear main seal). I have a 1996 850 GLE which was diagnosed with a leaking rear main seal. This is very odd, because of the age and milage of the car. I was at the mercy of the dealership, so I had to cough up the $1000cdn. I have recently read that you might get mis-diagnosed because of a leaky/clogged flame trap.

The reason I am writing this is because that last service that was done on my car was the flame trap. I feel as thought I have been had.

Can anyone confirm this for me?
