Radio & Octane - Two Questions 850 1994

I saw your reply regarding the 91, yes that is the recommended octane for the 850 Turbo.

I have heard differing opinions from other Volvo owners regarding each level of octane: some say 87 gave them the best performance, but recommended I try the 89 or 91; others say that when they used 87 they got the knocks and what have you, so moved to 89 and got increased gas mileage; still others say to go maximum octane available; and others have said that they went to 91 and that caused lower performance so they went back down to 89 and experienced great performance. Then when I mention that 89 in Iowa is an ethanol blend, they say, "Huh, I don't know about that."

I've done quite a bit of searching on this board on ethanol blend gasolines, and the verdict seems to be mixed. I am worried about a possible fuel filter clogging issue, but I may as well go try it.

Btw, I just got my Volvo three weeks ago and have used 87, and have not experienced any knocks and I am getting 20 mpg with about 50/50 city/highway driving.

Thanks for your input (not just you, but everyone who replied)!

Chris.
