I wouldn't buy or recommend some new models but the 2WD (FWD) V70 and S60 has so far proven to be very good cars and I doubt they'll experience the same problems that some of the other models have.
Stay away from AWD. The new AWD now used in the AWD S60 is too new for anyone to really know how it'll be in later years but the older AWDs have had alot of bad press, etc.
The S80 has been more reliable in general since its first year BUT Volvo still hasn't totally fixed all of the front suspension problems as needed IMHO.
I'm not fond of X40s or C70s but that's my opinion as some like those models.
