clunk/clicking sounds while braking to a stop? 850

Hi
I have a 1994 Volvo 850 automatic with 98K miles on it. Of late
sometimes when I brake to a stop there is a soft clunk or a clicking
sound when I brake to a complete stop. The sound comes up just before
the car stops (not during the downshifts). The gear shifts are all smooth
and I don't hear any such sounds. I was wondering what the problem
could be ? ... suspension ? ... tranny? Any info will be
appreciated.

thanks
Mahi
