Tire Feathering on an 1996 855T 850 1996

I have a 1996 855T and I've been having a problem with the rear tires feathering in the inside edges of the tread. I'm currently using 205/50 16 Pierelli P7000 Supersports. They are asysmetric tires so the only way I can rotate is front to back which doesn't help much. With every tire change I do a four wheel alignment. The feathering makes for really noisy ride.

Is this normal wear for the rear axle on 850/V70's? My mechanic suggested replacing the shocks and tires and then doing a four wheel alignment. But I don't want to do the alignment if the problem is in the tires.

TIA,
ERIC
