I had a similar situation, except that I had front end damage due to a another driver running a stop sign. On first inspection, it didn't look that bad. Maybe $2000 to $3000 to repair the bumper cover. But once the body shop got the hood open the estimate jumped from $2,000 for the bumper to $15,000 for internal damage, body work, turbo related items, subframe etc.. Something that my volvo dealer told me. "Volvo's are designed to absorp the damage and spread the energy of the impact throughout the structure of the car. What may seem like a little repair at first glance, can be rather costly; especially if airbags go off."

In a rear impact like one posted on originally, even if it looks minor, remember this is a VOLVO. Nothing is cheap, and nothing is ever minor.
