850 fuel leak around tank - can't find source 850 1993

I'm trying to locate the source of an intermittent fuel leak around the tank. There are gas stains in the area where the fuel filler neck enters the tank. There are more stains from the top of the tank flowing down. Pulled fuel pump and level sending unit covers. No obvious wet spots from either pump or sending unit. The various hoses at the top of the tank look OK. Do not feel dampness on hoses.

Turned on ignition to energize fuel pump. It comes on for five seconds (as designed I think) but I hear a lot of gurgling sounds. Don't know if this is normal. Did not see gas leaking at hoses exiting pump.

I don't really want to drop the tank if I don't have to. Anyone else had this experience? My biggest fear is a crack in the tank that opens up occasionally. Leak has gotten severe enough at times that is softened the undercoating enough to drip on garage floor and leave spot size of quarter.
