How would the ride be if......... 850 1997

I bet the dealer does say that your struts/shocks are still good. In fact, they will continue to say that until you start seeing oil from the strut/shock leaking out.

I'm not saying your struts/shocks are destroyed, but the fact that they are 5 years old tell me that they are worn to the point that ride degradation has occured. On my 855T, after I switched to H&R springs and Koni adjustable shocks, I thought my ride would degrade. However, even with less suspension travel with each bump, my ride has increased, entirely because the struts/shocks do a better job of isolating the road.

It's hard to believe, but I'm telling you from experience, it works.
